Reishi Tea

Reishi mushrooms have been widely used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. It’s benefits may include bolstering the immune system, stress relief, and aiding restful sleep. Perfect for cool fall morning, this warm reishi tea recipe can be switched up to your heart’s desire.

Ingredients

  • Fresh reishi mushroom: 25–30 grams (about 1–1.5 ounces), thinly sliced
  • Filtered water: 4 cups (1 liter)
  • 2–3 slices fresh ginger
  • 1 stick cinnamon or 1 tsp whole cloves
  • Honey or lemon to taste (added after simmering)

Instructions

  1. Clean the reishi gently with a damp cloth (don’t soak! it absorbs water fast).
  2. Slice thinly — the thinner, the better for extraction.
  3. Add to a pot with the 4 cups of water.
  4. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce to a low simmer.
  5. Simmer for 90 minutes to 2 hours, uncovered or loosely covered.
    • You can go longer (up to 3 hours) for maximum potency.
    • The longer you simmer, the more bitter the tea will be
  6. Strain and drink warm. Add honey or lemon if desired.
